More than 17 years ago, Operation Gratitude sent its first four care packages to deployed service members in Iraq. Since then, it has given millions of Americans the opportunity to express appreciation to military members, first responders, and others through hands-on volunteerism.

Give To Get has worked with Operation Gratitude since our inception. At in-person events, volunteers are given the opportunity to make paracord bracelets, pack boredom busters, and write cards of support for military members, first responders, and others. Now, through our At-Home Volunteer Program, volunteers have the opportunity to write cards and make paracord bracelets that are included in Operation Gratitude’s care packages.

To date, Operation Gratitude has sent care packages to more than 1.8 million deployed troops as well as 1.1 million recruit graduates, veterans, military families, first responders, and healthcare heroes. This includes the 360,000 care packages given to frontline responders since March when the pandemic dramatically changed life in the United States. These care packages have made a tangible impact during challenging times, Operation Gratitude’s leadership says.

“The men and women on the frontlines are working tirelessly to fight an invisible enemy in unthinkable conditions,” said Operation Gratitude CEO & retired Marine Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Schmiegel. “They are exhausted and their spirits are at an all-time low, yet they continue to serve our communities and all of us with courage and resolve. So, we will continue to support them. No matter what the demand is — they can’t stop, so we won’t stop.”

The organization’s efforts are made possible thanks to volunteers, who are the organization’s heart and soul, Schmiegel said.

John, who serves in the Air Force, said, “We received your care packages today, and the joy it brought to the faces of everyone I’m deployed with was just amazing. Today was my daughter’s first day of preschool, and I was really in a low spot missing her and all of the special moments we won’t get to share this year because I’m away. This care package really lifted me up. Thank you so much, and if I could hug you all I would.”

Although Give To Get offers ways for individuals to support Operation Gratitude through our At-Home Program, there are other ways to get involved, too!

  • Those who enjoy knitting, crocheting, or sewing can participate in the organization’s Handmade with Love initiative to make hats, scarves, and other items for military members.

  • As October approaches, the organization also encourages individuals to participate in the Halloween Candy Give-Back Program, which allows volunteers to share a portion of their Halloween candy with deployed troops, veterans, and first responders.
