Need

Cox Enterprises, based in Atlanta, GA, employs more than 55,000 individuals across its divisions. They needed a way to engage their nine Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) across the country.  The ERGs wanted to collaborate with other groups in celebration of the company’s commitment to STEM education through multiple regional nonprofit organizations.

Approach

With our extensive experience of the Cox Enterprises volunteering ecosystem (70 programs over 5 years), we quickly started collaborating with their established nonprofit partner, the Urban League to define the program scope.  We sourced materials (STEM robots), organized employees by ERG and geography, and facilitated an online virtual event featuring nine breakout rooms. This program was designed to unite Cox employees while showcasing the individuality of each ERG and providing valuable contributions.

Impact

During the online event, participants built and tested 100 STEM robots within the hour. All 100 remote employees were from diverse backgrounds experienced a strong sense of connection, both as part of a unified company and their specific ERGs. The completed robots were donated to local chapters of the National Urban League, which will enhance STEM robotics programming in underserved areas. Additionally, educational resources were provided with the robots to support students’ understanding of robotics and coding fundamentals.
